DERBY College Group are sponsoring the Sportsman of the Year category at the 2019 Derby Telegraph Sports Awards.

The Group provides unique learning experiences for thousands of students every year, giving them the necessary skills to progress in the next step of their lives.

April Hayhurst is deputy principal at Derby College Group and she explained why they chose to come on board as category sponsors.

“It is a huge honour to once again sponsor the Sportsman of the Year award,” she said.

“As a Group focusing on further, higher and work-based learning, we highlight the success of our alumni as positive role models to today’s students.

“This showcases how they have gone on to achieve great careers and make a positive difference in their workplace and in local communities.

“The winner of the Sportsman of the Year award will no doubt be another very positive role model and will set the bar for others, particularly young people, to aspire to.”

April also outlined the main skills required to succeed in the sporting world.

“Hard work, listening to those with more experience and having the determination to succeed are key attributes within a sportsman - from grass roots to elite levels,” she added.

“Indeed, these skills are vital in all aspects of life and that is why sport is particularly crucial to young people’s development, to nurture the attitudes and behaviours that employers want.”
