A MAN abused hospital staff with foul language when they were trying to treat him.

Martin Unwin began shouting and swearing at staff at Royal Derby Hospital after going to the site about ulcers on his leg.

Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court heard that the 44-year-old had been given something to stop the effects of the drugs that were in his system.

Frustrated by this, he began insulting the staff, using foul language.

The court also heard Unwin plead guilty to two charges of possession of class B drugs – one of which related to when he was at the hospital.

Balbir Samra, chair of the magistrates’ bench, said: “We don’t take kindly for the behaviour that has been outlined. It was at the hospital with workers and nurses and doctors. They are there to do a job, they don’t want people like you messing it all up.”

Peter Bettany, prosecuting, said the incident took place at 2.40am on December 11.

He said: “The senior sister could hear shouting coming from a bay. They went to investigate. The defendant was shouting ‘you stupid ******* slut,’ ‘I need some more heroin.’ He was told to calm down. He continued to shout and swear.

“He called staff sluts, whores and slags. Police arrived and found cannabis (on him).”

Mr Bettany said Unwin was interviewed about the matter, telling officers he had gone to hospital because of ulcers on his leg.

He said his behaviour was not acceptable. Regarding the cannabis, he told police he had been given tobacco and he was going to pick out the bits of drug and smoke the tobacco.

The court also heard police caught him with class B drugs in a separate incident on November 17.

James Close, mitigating, told the court Unwin pleaded guilty at the first opportunity. He said: “He is regretful about what happened and he can’t remember the incident.

“He tells me that he wasn’t going to use the drugs and was going to throw them away.

“He has ulcers in his leg and struggles to work and receives personal independence payment.”

Unwin, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to a public order offence and two charges of possession of a controlled drug of class B.

Magistrates handed him a 24-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay costs of £170 and a £21 victim surcharge.
