A post put up on the Derby Jamia Mosque Facebook page at the weekend said both faiths “condemn the senseless acts without reservation”.

The statement goes on to read how the “actions of individuals do not represent our communities”.

Police charged Mohammed Ibrar with wounding with intent and burglary following two separate incidents in the same locality.

The 31-year-old, of Cromwell Road, Normanton, is alleged to have broken into the Guru Arjan Dev Gurdwara in Stanhope Street on the morning of Monday, May 25.

Another call came in to police minutes later to say a man had been stabbed inside the Polanica shop, in Normanton Road.

On arrival, officers found a 41-year-old man with injuries. The injured man was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment and was later discharged.

Ibrar appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court the following day as detectives confirmed both incidents were being treated as hate crimes.

He was not asked to enter any pleas to the charges he faces, was remanded into custody by District Judge Andrew Meachin and is next scheduled to appear at Derby Crown Court on June 23.

“While I still haven’t got the confidence to go to the gym, I’ve taken up walking and we go for three-mile walks with the kids on Allestree Park most days.

“We all love going swimming, too, and look forward to going again when we can,” she added.

Angela says she has changed as a person thanks to her weight loss and has become more confident.

She added: “My weight loss has boosted my confidence no end. Thank you to my consultant Kate and all that go to the Slimming World group in Allestree on a Tuesday. I’m so different. Instead of sitting at the back of the room at a party, I’m up at the front.”
