Plans for takeaway outlet set for go-ahead despite local objections

-

THE application to open a Papa John’s pizza takeaway in a Derby suburb has been recommended for approval by council planners.

Several objections have been received on the grounds that there are already too many hot food takeaways in Nottingham Road, Chaddesden. Pizza Hut, Domino’s Pizza, 3 Chefs and Scoops Express also trade nearby.

Those objecting also cite an increase in air pollution, parking problems and littering as well as the impact on other businesses.

A previous application in 2013 for the former William Hill bookmakers shop in the shopping precinct in Nottingham Road was turned down by the planning committee but later allowed on appeal. However, the work never took place.

The latest application is again for a change of use and also for the building of a flat-roofed singlestorey extension and the demolition of an existing lean-to extension.

Currently Papa John’s has two takeaway stores in Derby, one on Osmaston Road and the other at

Park Farm Shopping Centre in Allestree.

Derby City Council’s planning control committee will hear the application on Thursday rvrning at a virtual meeting. Members will be told that if permission was given, 15% of the 47 retail units would be given over to hot food takeaways “which could not be considered to have an adverse effect on the centre”.

A committee report concludes: “I am satisfied that the approval of a hot food takeaway in this location would have a positive impact on the vitality and viability of the centre, while not undermining the role of the primary shopping area.”

If the application is granted a condition reducing the hours the company wanted will be imposed. This will mean that it can only open from 8.30am to 11.30pm Monday to Saturday and 8.30am to 11pm on Sundays and bank and public holidays.

The online meeting can be accessed on the city council’s YouTube channel from 6pm.
