Mum in court accused of murdering five-month-old
A DERBY mum charged with murdering her five-month-old son has appeared in court.
Samantha Pink spoke only to confirm her name and that she could hear the proceedings when she appeared over a video link at Derby Crown Court.
The short hearing was told her defence team had received two psychiatric reports on the 39-year-old and that the prosecution would now do the same.
A provisional trial date has been set to December 7. A High Court judge will preside over the case, which is expected to last up to eight days. Pink, of Stenson Fields, is alleged to have killed Connor Young at the Radbourne Unit of the Royal Derby Hospital, in Uttoxeter New Road.
At the opening of his inquest at Derby Coroner’s Court, it was heard how the child was found unresponsive at The Beeches, a mother and baby inpatient unit based at the Radbourne Centre, in Derby. Connor had been staying at the perinatal mental health unit with his mother, Pink.
Police received a call from East Midlands Ambulance Service at 12.15am on Sunday, July 12 stating that they had attended at The Beeches and were performing CPR on a baby. Connor was taken to the children’s emergency department at the Royal Derby Hospital where he later died.
The inquest was told that a postmortem examination had been carried out and a medical cause of death is at this stage pending further investigation.
Assistant coroner Louise Pinder formally opened the inquest, to be reviewed again while a further investigation is carried out.
Wearing a blue top over the link at the crown court hearing, Pink, who lives off Arleston Lane, was remanded into custody. She is yet to enter any plea.
Members of her family were also able to view proceedings through a separate link along with a police officer who is investigating Connor’s death.
