A DERBYSHIRE pensioner tried to groom a 14-year-old girl, sending her disgusting photographs of himself

Michael Nunns was told it is quite plain he presents a danger to children even though Carla, the girl he was exchanging messages with online, was really a decoy.

Judge Nirmal Shant QC told the 76-year-old she had read his presentence report in which he told the probation service “there was no harm” in what he was doing.

Now he has been handed a sixyear prison sentence, meaning he will now not be able to move to Thailand to be with his wife who already lives there.

Judge Shant said: “There is a significant risk of serious harm to young children, it is quite plain you present a danger to them.

“You openly admit you knew you were talking to a 14-year-old even though she was really a fictional person.

“You were talking to her about sexual things and at no stage have you understood the impact.

“You said if she was a 14-year-old on the website there would be no harm.”

Derby Crown Court heard how Nunns, of Newbridge Lane, Old Whittington, Chesterfield, offended between April 13 and 19, 2018.

He was arrested after information was received that he was grooming Carly, who was really a decoy.

Judge Shant said: “What you intended was to groom her and exploit her vulnerability – she told you she was being bullied at school.

“You saw yourself as a sort of father figure and tried to get her to engage in sexual activity. What you did not know was that you were talking to a fictional person.

“You sent her photos of your private parts and your intention was for you to engage in sexual activity with her.”

Nunns pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to meet a girl under 16 years of age following grooming, attempting to cause or incite a girl 13-15 to engage in sexual activity and attempting to cause a child aged 13 to 15 to watch or look at an image of sexual activity.

James Beck, mitigating, said: “He is a man who is 76 and is not in the best of health.

“He is married to a mature woman in Thailand and he had been visiting her immediately before he was asked to attend the magistrates’ court.

“His intention was to obtain a long-stay visa and go and live with her in Thailand.” Nunns’ six-year sentence is made up of two years in custody and four years on an extended licence where he will be monitored in the community by the probation service.

You intended to groom her and exploit her vulnerability – she told you she was being bullied at school.
