Warning after chemical attack on dog

-

A COUPLE have been left shocked after their pet dog was attacked by a chemical substance in a park.

Matthew Goode was walking his dogs in Shipley Country Park when he noticed that one of them was covered in a wet substance.

After taking the animal home and washing it, Mr Goode noticed a strong smell of rotten eggs and blisters where the liquid had been.

Mr Goode and wife Karen rushed the dog to the vet, where they were told their pet had been attacked by a chemical substance.

Mrs Goode was horrified at the news. She said: “Straight away, the vet said someone had deliberately attacked our dog, Austin, with something like a squirt gun.

“We were absolutely mortified. You hear of plenty of examples of cruelty to animals on the internet but you never think it’s going to happen to your own pet.

“It’s frightening to think people could do that. Austin is so happy and friendly. It scares the hell out of me that people like this are out there.”

Since the attack took place on Monday at around 7.30am, Austin’s

injuries have become more severe severe. There are now clear lines of blisters across his left leg, side and back, and the wounds look like they could be infected.

Mrs Goode said: “Over the past couple of days it’s hit me more more. I’ve been numb and in complete shock. I keep racking my brain trying to figure out why it happened to us. I’m desperate to know who could do this. Someone’s clearly gone to the park with a weapon that could maim someone. Imagine if it was used on a person. It’s terrifying to think about. The fact it’s at a place we’ve visited for 25 years just makes it far worse.”

Although Mr Goode said he kept the dogs in his sight at all times, he did not spot who was responsible for the attack. This meant police were unable to investigate further, as they had no lines of investigation.

Mrs Goode said she understood this was police procedure but is scared another attack might happen. She is urging anyone who has experienced anything similar to come forward.

Mrs Goode said: “This could happen to anyone. If something happens or has happened please bring it to light. It’s the only way we might find who was responsible.

“In the meantime, I encourage anyone going to Shipley Park to be extra vigilant. I’m incredibly worried that this could happen to another animal – or even a person.”

Derbyshire County Council has been made aware of the incident and warned those visiting the area to take care.

A spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident and it is extremely concerning. We’d always urge people to keep their dogs under close supervision and be alert.

“This must have been very distressing for the owner and their dog and we’d urge anyone who has any information to let the police know.”
