Store vows action over fly-tipping at recycling bins

- By GEORGE WHITE

CUSTOMERS of a Sainsbury’s supermarket in Derby have been left outraged at the amount of rubbish dumped at the store’s recycling point.

Piles of bin bags, cardboard boxes and old clothes littered the site at Kingsway Retail Park.

Sainsbury’s has responded to the complaints, claiming it is working to clear the mess as quickly as possible.

A spokesperson said: “We arrange for rubbish at the recycling point to be cleared frequently, but due to some people also using the area to fly-tip, it can build up. We have arranged for additional collections to be made. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Images of the rubbish were submitted by Helen Burton, a reader living in the city. She arrived at Sainsbury’s to do some shopping on Wednesday afternoon and was shocked to see the mess. Before leaving the site, she took some photos to raise awareness of the issue and find out who dumped the litter

Helen said: “I am appalled that we have people in our city who can treat a community facility in such a way. I have no idea who is responsible for making this mess, which is why I posted the images to try and find out if anyone does.”

Another reader claimed this was a recurring issue and said Sainsbury’s was taking too long to clean up the mess. They said: “It’s a disgrace. It’s been like it on a few occasions and they seem very slow to clear and keep those bins empty.”

One person argued more needed to be done to deter culprits before they litter. They said: “If a few people got into trouble it might stop this. Especially if they had to pay out some money.”

Sainsbury’s has said it is taking steps to prevent further fly-tipping at the site.

A spokesperson said: “We plan to fence off the area over Christmas to try and avoid this happening.”
