A Covid fine was given to this driver and his brother after a car was spotted travelling at 106mph on Derby’s Raynesway

POLICE have revealed they issued a number of Covid fines in one night – and in one instance gave one to a driver minutes after he was clocked driving at 106mph.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit say an officer in an unmarked car caught the driver down Raynesway in Derby going more than twice the 50mph speed limit on Monday night.

Police say the driver also ignored a bollard which directs drivers to keep to the left.

Officers said the driver was “out for a drive” with his brother, who was found in possession of cannabis.

As Derby was at the time under Tier 4 coronavirus restrictions, the driver and his brother were given £200 Covid breach fines.

The driver was also given a traffic ticket for motoring offences.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said on Twitter: “Derby. Comes steaming by one of our unmarked cars on Raynesway. Speed measured to 106mph. Then wrong sides a keep-left bollard.

“Out for a drive with brother who has cannabis on him. Traffic ticket for driver and Covid restriction breach ticket for them both.”

In another tweet, police also issued Covid fines to two more people after they were spotted “out for a drive” on Normanton Road.

Police tweeted: “Driver and passenger state they are out for a drive. Then change their mind to say they are out buying ringworm medication.

“Try dodgy details and a mouthful of abuse. All futile. Two tickets for Covid restriction breaches.”

Under new coronavirus regulations, anyone breaking the rules can be fined £200 for the first offence, which is reduced to £100 if paid within 14 days. That rises to £400 for the second offence, then doubles for each further offence up to a maximum of £6,400.

They could also be taken to court and be fined an unlimited amount.
