A DERBY takeaway had an unexpected rat problem when a rodent scuttled into its shop from the street.

The rodent entered Monmo’s, in London Road, through the open front door.

Video of the rat’s journey in the shop was recorded and shared on a local Facebook site “Str8 Outta Normanton”.

The restaurant has since hired an exterminator who has eradicated the problem and Monmo’s said it wished to reassure customers that every action is taken to prevent pest problems.

In a post on its official Facebook page, it said: “To help eradicate any type of pest problems we have taken the services of Enviroclenz Ltd. We have regular inspections by Enviroclenz Ltd at Monmo’s.

“I would like to ensure customers that measures are in place to eliminate any type of pest problem that may occur on site, here at Monmo’s. We take seriously any breach in hygiene levels caused by pests.

“With regards to the recent incident involving the clip being circulated of a rodent on the premise – on investigation, viewing CCTV footage, the rodent entered the restaurant from the front entrance. We were able to catch the rodent, remove it from the premise, while the people who made the video were in the restaurant, and eradicate the threat to our hygiene here at Monmo’s.”

The restaurant has had official confirmation from Derby City Council that the problem has been resolved.

It added: “I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to our customers for this isolated incident and ensure that such incidents are taken seriously and dealt with immediately.

“In light of this incident we asked the council to inspect our premises and the senior environmental health officer did a thorough investigation.”

In this letter, shared on Monmo’s Facebook page, a Derby City Council inspector concluded: “I inspected the food preparation and storage areas during my visit and found there was no sign of activity and as a result no risk to food safety from pests.”
