CELTIC TIPPED TO BID FOR RAMS KEEPER
CELTIC have been tipped to make a move for Derby County goalkeeper David Marshall in the summer.
Former Bhoys defender Mark Wilson thinks the Parkhead club could solve their problems between the sticks by signing Marshall.
Marshall joined Derby last summer, signing from Wigan Athletic following their relegation to League One.
The Scotland international won his 42nd cap in the 2-2 draw with Austria on Wednesday and helped his country qualify for this summer’s European Championships back in October.
He has made 28 appearances for the Rams this season.
Marshall missed games through illness earlier this season and has been out of the side since the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on February 26.
Marshall picked up a back injury in saving James Garner’s shot in the East Midlands derby at Pride Park and was out for the next three games.
Marshall returned to full fitness for the March 13 defeat to Millwall but is yet to return to Wayne Rooney’s starting 11 since then, with Kelle Roos preferred.
Celtic have struggled this season, relinquishing the Scottish Premiership title to old foes Rangers.
John Kennedy’s side have alternated between Scott Bain, Vasilios Barkas and Conor Hazard in goal.
Speaking to the Celtic Huddle podcast, Wilson said: “A name that hasn’t gone away from the summer that I think Celtic should go for again, just to get in the door as number one and it would sort out their problem – I think they should go for Marshall.
“People will say ‘it’s a step backwards, he’s 35 or 36 years old.’ But I look across the city and see Allan McGregor coming to Rangers. Was he 38 when he came? 37? I see pictures of him holding the Player of the
Year for Scotland trophy.
“I know he’s still got another year to go, but surely Marsh would be up for coming back to Glasgow.”
The Scots twice came from behind to rescue a point against Austria.
Sasa Kalajdzic put the away side ahead early in the second half but Scotland equalised through Grant Hanley’s header.
They were behind again with only 10 minutes remaining as Kalajdzic got his second only for John McGinn to level in the 85th minute.
Scotland take on Israel in Tel Aviv tomorrow.
