TERRIFIED HOUSEHOLDERS TRAPPED BY FIRE

- By MATTHEW LODGE

TERRIFIED householders were trapped inside their burning homes while firefighters rushed to rescue them.

Four people were saved from two adjoining houses in the village of Radbourne, near Mickleover, after fire broke out in the early hours of yesterday.

They were treated for smoke inhalation by medics at the scene.

FOUR people were trapped when a devastating fire broke out in the outskirts of Derby in the early hours of yesterday.

They had to be rescued by firefighters who were called to the village of Radbourne, near Mickleover, just after 3am.

Two houses linked by a car port were involved in the incident.

Smoke alarms woke the four people inside but due to the location of the fire they were unable to escape.

They rang the emergency services, who guided them through how to stay safe while firefighters from Kingsway, Nottingham Road and Ascot Drive fire stations in Derby, as well as crews from Alfreton, Melbourne and Tutbury, rushed to the scene.

The firefighters went inside the blazing properties to bring the householders to safety. The occupants were treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze has determined it most likely started accidentally due to an electrical problem.

Station manager Dave Higgins said the working smoke alarms had done their job by waking the occupants up early enough to call for help. “Fire crews were called just after 3am this morning to a fire that was affecting two properties connected by a car port,” he said.

“Thankfully the occupants of both properties were alerted by their smoke alarms and were able to call the fire service.

“As the occupants were unable to escape and get to safety, fire control operators stayed on the phone and give fire survival guidance to both couples until the arrival of firefighters.

“Once again, smoke alarms have proved vital in preventing a more serious fire by giving the occupants vital early warning, allowing them to ring 999 and call for help.

“If you haven’t got smoke alarms fitted in your home, please get them fitted as soon as possible, and ensure you test them weekly to ensure they are working.”
