AN elderly Derby man died from an illness as a result of a crash on a busy city road more than 30 years ago, an inquest has heard.

Lahmber Singh Gidda died aged 70 from pneumonia last year which was caused following injuries he sustained in a serious car crash in 1987 which left him physically impaired.

The crash happened on July 26, 1987, in Warwick Avenue in Littleover, one of the city’s main routes.

Mr Gidda was the driver of one of the two cars involved and was in hospital for a long time due to the severity of his condition

Derby and Derbyshire Coroner’s Court heard how the crash left Mr Gidda, who worked as a printer, “significantly physically and cognitively impaired”.

Doctors gave evidence to say his medical cause of death was pneumonia caused by the crash. Because the incident happened more than 30 years ago, police were unable to provide the coroner with information about the crash itself as police archive records into accidents start from 2008.

Mr Gidda, who was born in India, died at his Littleover home on the evening of November 5 . He was being cared for there by his family.

The coroner, Louise Pinder, praised Mr Gidda’s family for the way they looked after him for so many years following the accident.

Miss Pinder concluded: “Mr Gidda was involved in a road traffic collision in July 1987, sustaining injuries which left him significantly physically and cognitively impaired.

“He was cared for at home by his loving family and was found deceased in his bed on November 5, 2020.

“I am going to record Mr Gidda died as a result of a road traffic collision because I’m of the view his injuries sustained were the cause of the pneumonia which ultimately led to his death.

“It is an absolute credit to the family that he survived for as long as he did.”
