Most rivals are beaten once more

-

FOUR of the six teams below Burton Albion in League One lost on Saturday, with only Northampton Town winning, while Wigan Athletic had been beaten on Wednesday night.

That means the Brewers are six points ahead of the drop zone with games in hand on four of the six and with the best goal difference of the group vying to stay up.

Second-bottom Bristol Rovers appear to be the team in the most trouble, as a 2-1 defeat away to Ipswich Town was their fifth straight loss.

Luke Leahy’s own goal put them behind in the first minute against Ipswich and Alan Judge made it 2-0 in the 11th minute.

Luke McCormick pulled one back after 18 minutes but that was the end of the scoring.

Bottom club Rochdale went down 2-1 away to Portsmouth, who were two up through Ronan Curtis and Ryan Williams by halftime and could not respond until stoppage time through Jake Beesley.

Burton’s opponents today, Swindon Town, lost 2-0 at home to in-form Blackpool, who scored through Ellis Simms and Jerry Yates either side of half-time.

AFC Wimbledon were beaten 1-0 away to Plymouth Argyle, Sam Woods scoring the only goal after 11 minutes.

Ryan Watson’s 27th-minute goal was enough for Northampton to beat Shrewsbury Town 1-0 and lift the Cobblers three points clear of the drop zone.

At the top of the table, leaders Hull City won 2-1 away to Crewe Alexandra and second-placed Peterborough United kept up when Jonson Clarke-Harris hit an 89th-minute goal for a 1-0 win away to Fleetwood Town.

Sunderland, in third, are unbeaten in 11 League games after coming from behind to beat Oxford United 3-1.
