Councillor is new chairman of council

COUNCILLOR Martin Thacker has been elected the 35th chairman of North East Derbyshire Council for the coming civic year.

Born and bred in Walton, where he still lives, he is an “ardent advocate” for North East Derbyshire.

He is also vice-chairman of Chesterfie­ld FC and director of Chesterfie­ld Football Community Trust. A campaigner for the deaf community, he was awarded an MBE for services to the deaf in 2000.

A career in education included 18 years as a head teacher in two schools.

He also served for three years as regional president for the East Midlands of the National Associatio­n of Headteache­rs.
