Farewells to the Rams’ oldest fan at 103 and farm shop founder Steve

- By ANTON RIPPON AND AVA FORBES

DERBY County’s oldest fan has died at the age of 103.

Derek Eley had dedicated his life to watching the Rams, and apart from the Second World War, had been to almost every home game for 90 years.

Speaking when celebrating his 100th birthday in 2017, he said: “There is no secret to old age just luck and kindness.

“If you are kind and nice to people, most people will be nice back to you and that’s how I live my life.”

After watching his first game in 1931, he reckoned that he had seen more than 1,700 Rams matches, and travelled more than 130,000 miles following the club he loved.

In 2019, his dreams came true as he was nominated as the guest of honour at a game against Preston.

He had the honour of delivering the matchball at the beginning of the game and was able to watch the match from the VIP box.

A statement on Derby County’s Facebook page reads: “Everyone at DCFC is saddened to learn of the passing of our oldest supporter, Derek Eley. Rest in peace Mr Derby County, and thank you for your

incredible support.” Tributes from supporters flooded in for the man who was also thought to be the oldest football fan in the country.

Karl Walker said: “Such a legend around my area, and an avid Derby fan. He will be missed by all in the High Peak and the football community … Had some great times watching games with him.”

Andy Neil said: “I live close to Derek, and he was the most genuine gentleman you could ever meet.”

Donna Marie said: “Beautiful man. Many trips in the minibus to and from home games. So sad.”

Caron Morris said: “An amazing and loyal gentleman. RIP.”

When the Rams’ FA Cup-winning run began in 1946, Mr Eley was serving in the Army as a colour sergeant in France.

When they reached the cup final, he wrote to the club chairman asking for a ticket, and he was at Wembley to see Derby beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 after extra time, to lift the trophy for the first, and, so far, only, time in the club’s history.

Chairman of his local Royal British Legion branch at Chapel-en-leFrith, and holder of the British Empire Medal for his military service, Mr Eley had a street named after him in his home town.
