One of England’s best-known wicketkeep­ers, Godfrey Evans, was born. The Kent player dismissed 219 batsmen in 91 Test matches and was the first to claim 200 Test victims. He died on May 3, 1999.

1948:

Lester Piggott won his first horse race aged 12, riding The Chase to victory in the Wigan Lane Selling Handicap at Haydock.

1990:

New Zealand’s All Blacks suffered their first defeat for nearly four years, losing 21-9 to Australia in Wellington to end a run of 23 consecutiv­e wins.

2008:

Great Britain’s cycling quartet of Paul Manning, Bradley Wiggins, Ed Clancy and Geraint Thomas won an Olympic gold medal in the men’s team pursuit in a world record time of three minutes 53.314 seconds in Beijing.

2011:

UK Athletics confirmed it would bid to host the 2017 World Championsh­ips in London. The city was chosen as host ahead of Doha in November 2011.

2013:

Europe won the Solheim Cup on American soil for the first time with an 18-10 win over the United States.

2017:

Alastair Cook completed his fourth Test double-century as England continued their domination of the West Indies attack on the second day of their first day-night Test at Edgbaston.

Tyson Fury beat Francesco Pianeta on a points decision in their heavyweigh­t fight in Belfast before agreeing a showdown with WBC champion Deontay Wilder.
