PEOPLE in Stoney Middleton have become used to seeing big lorries thunder through their village in recent years, especially as they head off towards Manchester.

However, the latest addition to the collection of lorries brought a bit of a surprise and raised excitement levels in the Derbyshire village as it carried the train which will form the centrepiece of the Mission Impossible stunt due to take place in a quarry above Stoney Middleton.

The arrival of the train, coupled with an increase in activity around the site at Darlton Quarry suggests that filming is due to happen in the very near future, however when our reporter went up to check out the train, it still looked like plenty of work was being carried out.

It’s understood the scene will see the train drive off the edge of the cliff and fall into the quarry below, exploding on impact.

The role of Tom Cruise in the scene hasn’t been announced but people have speculated with us that he’s going to jump to safety moments before it leaves the tracks and tumbles to its doom.

As well as the work on the train, preparations are also picking up in the quarry itself. Pictures show tank

ers filling up a pool which the production company has dug in the quarry bottom and a line of trees, believed to have come from the Chatsworth House estate, sitting on stilts underneath the end of the track. It’s understood the pool of water on the quarry floor is anywhere between 12 feet and 14 feet deep and it’s expected the train will land in it once it comes off the track.

Richard Bowring lives in Stoney Middleton and says excitement has picked up in the village.

He said: “On Saturday the steam engine and coal tender that were also used for filming in North Yorkshire were spotted arriving on set and it was all systems go again.

“This has caused a lot of excitement in the village of Stoney Middleton and indeed the surrounding areas. Nothing like this has ever happened around here before.

“I live on High Street in Stoney Middleton and since the train arrived there has been a constant stream of vehicles going to view Tom’s train and film

set.”

No date has been announced for when the filming will take place, however signs advising of future road closures have been spotted around the site indicating that it could be happening in a couple of weeks’ time.

This has caused a lot of excitement in the village of Stoney Middleton and surrounds Richard Bowring
