Collective’s first event for photography, music and art
A COLLECTIVE which aims to support and give a platform to people with autism and other special needs is holding its first exhibition in Derby.
The Little Canyon Collective, based in Wirksworth, will be showcasing the photography, music and artwork of five of its members at the Dubrek Studios in Becket Street on Saturday, from 1pm to 4pm.
The collective was founded by James Waring, who had previously launched the printing business where it is based, and Arran Day, guitarist with local band These Wicked Rivers, in November.
That was in the depths of the pandemic, so the event in Derby will also be the first chance some of the members have had to meet each other, with a lot of their work so far carried out through Zoom or individual meetings.
Two photographers, Imogen
Ward and James Moore will be exhibiting, while Anthony Walker, who wants to pursue a career in broadcasting, will be MC for the event, introducing those involved.
Towards the end of the afternoon, Jack Rogan, another member who is an electronics wizard, will be presenting a DJ set.
“There’s a stereotype that people with autism have a kind of fixed progression, that they’ll get to a point where their development ends,” says Arran.
“I don’t think that’s true. I think, like all of us, people with autism can still grow and learn new skills and confidence through different experiences.
“I think the key to that is giving them new opportunities with things that hey care about.
“We wanted to find a platform to bring them together and show how far they’ve come.
“It will be the first time a lot of them have met, although they are all aware of each other.
“This is a lot about raising awareness of autism and Aspergers, but also celebrating it.”
The exhibition costs £2 to get in, with all profits going to the artists themselves, and all are welcome.
