HISTORIC England has objected to plans to transform an unused part of Derby city centre into a new vibrant market, describing it as “visually intrusive”.

Last month plans were submitted to Derby City Council proposing an outdoor food, drink and artisan traders venue at St Peter’s Churchyard, just off St Peter’s Street.

The market would feature 14 kiosk-style stalls, seating areas and a performance area in currently unused green space land.

Should it get the go-ahead it could be up and running next year.

But for the plans to turn to reality, applicant Burton Abbey Developments Ltd is seeking permission from the city council to demolish part of a Grade II Listed boundary wall within St Peter’s Church so a suitable entrance area to the site can be created.

This has led to Historic England – a public body that celebrates history and heritage – objecting to the plans saying a new market would be inappropriate for the area.

A report by Historic England to Derby City Council says: “In our view, the proposed structures would form an intensive cluster of utilitarian-type buildings which would be highly inappropriate in this sensitive green space.

“The proposed new entrance in our view is particularly inappropriate by virtue of its design of its overthrow, cement-rendered piers which do not match existing piers and security gates. It would result in unjustified alteration to the listed wall. “Overall the proposed development would be visually intrusive. It would compromise the setting of the highly graded St Peter’s Church and Old Grammar School.” Planning bosses at Derby City Council may consider Historic England’s comments when deciding the application’s fate.

Burton Abbey Developments Ltd says it wants to bring life back to an unused part of Derby city centre.

A spokesman for the firm previously told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “It’s a beautiful and rare green space in Derby which has not been used to its potential in recent times.

“The vision is to create a vibrant market to enhance the area. It will provide quite a nice food and drink area for residents and businesses so people can come and get everything in one place.”

The firm said a number of traders had already expressed interest in having one of the earmarked kiosks.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service has approached the applicant for comment on Historic England’s objection.
