INDEPENDENT businesses in and around Green Lane in Derby city centre will be pushed to the forefront this weekend in a bid to encourage visitors back to the area.

Today has been declared Green Lane Day, with businesses opening their doors with special offers and activities between 1pm and 3pm.

The programme has been organised by Derby City Council and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) to help businesses bounce back from the effects of the pandemic.

Activities will include dance performances by Nadia Jane Performing Arts, non-alcoholic drinks served by Yada Collective, face painting, glitter tattoos and food tasting.

There will also be a raffle for a

Derby County shirt organised and donated by Shooz 4 Kidz to raise money for charity.

Derby businesses Project D and Sacred Bean will also be on hand with a selection of hand-made doughnuts and locally-ground coffee.

St James’ Securities will be in attendance providing an update to visitors on the new Becketwell development nearby.

Helen Wathall, chair of St Peters Quarter BID, said: “As people are increasingly returning to the city centre both during the day and in the evening, this is a great opportunity to remind everyone about the hidden gems in St Peters Quarter, including Green Lane and the surrounding area. “We hope that Green Lane Day will encourage people to come and see for themselves the great range of independent businesses in this part of the city centre and enjoy a family-friendly event in the heart of the city centre.” Co-owner of Thai Boran street food on Green Lane, Srikanya Ingthaisong, said: “The pandemic has been tough on the hospitality industry and we welcome the opportunity to be part of this event to thank the customers who have supported us and introduce ourselves to people who have not visited us before.

“We are hoping for a good turnout.”

We hope this will encourage people to come and see the great range of independent businesses in this part of the city centre. Helen Wathall
