County’s 10 hotspots for Covid are revealed

- By MATTHEW LODGE

DERBY and Erewash have been revealed as the main Covid hotspots in the county, according to Government figures.

The two local authorities, which border one another, have been shown to contain seven of the ten parts of the county with the highest infection rates.

According to the latest available data, in the week to August 14 Long Eaton Town had the highest infection rate in Derbyshire. There were 53 cases recorded in the area, giving it an infection rate of 731.7 cases per 100,000 people.

Meanwhile, Ilkeston Town and Langwith, Shirebrook South and Pleasley, both saw 60 new cases, the highest in the county, in the same week.

Chaddesden West (57 new cases), Mackworth (58) and Chaddesden North (44), all saw high rates of infections during that time period.

Dark purple, purple and blue areas on the map indicate the highest rates of Covid infections, with yellow and green areas having lower rates.

It comes as infections continue to rise nationwide, with more than

219,000 new cases in the last seven days. The number of patients admitted to hospital with the disease has also risen, as has the number of people who have died within 28 days of a positive test.

However, experts believe vaccine uptake has significantly reduced the number of people who are dying and are seriously ill from the disease.

Nationwide 87.4 per cent of people have received one dose of the vaccine, while 76.0 per cent have been given both recommended jabs.

Many parts of Derbyshire have seen more than 90 per cent of residents receive one jab, while more than 80 per cent of people in High Peak, Derbyshire Dales, Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, South Derbyshire and Amber Valley have received both jabs.
