- By MARTIN NAYLOR

A DERBY mum was shot in the face by her former partner who was angry at the thought of her being with another man, a court has heard.

A jury was told Tyrone Harvey fired the weapon at Jodie Dickinson at her Alvaston home.

A 999 call, made by Miss Dickinson’s friend, was played to the jury. She could be heard screaming “my friend has just been shot in the face”. Asked by the operator who has shot her friend, the caller replied: “Her ex-partner.”

Harvey, 32, denies attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The improvised firearm used to shoot Miss Dickinson has never been recovered.

A DERBY mum was shot in the face by her former partner who was angry at the thought of her sleeping with a new man, a court heard.

A jury was told how jealous Tyrone Harvey fired the improvised weapon from close range into the mouth of Jodie Dickinson at her Alvaston home. A ball bearing shot upwards and fractured part of her eye socket where it became lodged and had to be removed surgically, the prosecutor said.

A 999 call, made by Miss Dickinson’s friend, was played to the jury. She could be heard screaming at the operator “my friend has just been shot in the face, she’s awake, she’s breathing, please hurry up”.

The 32-year-old defendant is accused of fleeing the scene in his car which was spotted by police cameras travelling south on the A38. He was stopped and arrested near Chesterfield days later while driving the same car.

Harvey was then charged with attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He denies both counts.

Opening the trial Jonathan Straw, prosecuting, told a jury of seven women and five men: “At just before 6am on January 11 this year at an address in Warren Street, a woman called Jodie Dickinson was shot in the face from a very close range by someone wielding an improvised handgun.

“The crown’s case is that the person who shot Jodie Dickinson intended to kill her.

The crown’s case is that the person who wielded the gun and pulled the trigger was this defendant, Tyrone Harvey, the former partner of Jodie Dickinson.”

Mr Straw said on the evening and into the morning of the shooting Miss Dickinson was staying at the address with her friend Tyra Holt. He said they were “chilling and drinking” gin and another friend contacted them to say she would come and join them. Mr Straw said that woman turned up with the defendant.

He said: “Jodie will tell you there was an argument and that he was accusing her of sleeping with another man. She says he then discharged the gun. Tyra had got up and left when she suddenly heard a loud bang. In fear she ran up the stairs but could hear Jodie shout ‘I have been shot, call an ambulance.’ “Tyra then made the 999 call saying her friend had been shot in the face and that he (Harvey) had gone but they were scared he was going to come back.”

Mr Straw played the call to the jury. In it Miss Holt could be heard saying: “She’s losing a lot of blood, please hurry up.”

Asked by the operator who has shot her friend, the caller replied: “Her ex-partner.”

Mr Straw said layer that morning a different friend of Miss Dickinson, called Daisy Whitehall, read about the shooting in Warren Street and tried to call her with no success.

So she contacted Harvey, of Chattaway Street, Ashted Nechells, Birmingham, on his Instagram account and exchanged messages with him.

Mr Straw said on one he said: “When summat bad happens to her you know it’s me.”

The defendant was arrested in the Chesterfield area around a week after the shooting and a search of his home uncovered ball bearings, gun oil, pellets for an air weapon and a firearms booklet.

The improvised firearm used to shoot Miss Dickinson has never been recovered.

The trial, which could last up to two weeks, continues.
