Public toilets are closed due to anti-social behaviour

-

PUBLIC toilets in a Derbyshire town have been closed following complaints about anti-social behaviour.

Erewash Borough Council received numerous complaints about the presence of hypodermic needles and masks being discarded in the toilets in Long Eaton.

Complainants also mentioned the unhygienic state of the cubicles.

The council confirmed that the disabled toilets have been unaffected by the closure and will still be accessible using a radar key. These will be constantly monitored as local authorities attempt to tackle the problem.

The council says it will be working with police and patrolling the areas around the toilets to identify possible reasons for the anti-social behaviour.

The hope is that the toilets will be reopened as soon as possible.

Councillor Garry Hickton, the council’s lead member for the environment, said: “It is incredibly disappointing that we have been driven into making this decision to close the toilets due to some members of the public who have been acting in such a reckless way.

“The perpetrators need to understand the consequences of their actions and the impact on the rest of the community and visitors to Long Eaton.

“Not only is it a form of anti -social behaviour but their actions pose huge health risks for everyone who uses the facilities.

“We are working hard to put an end to this behaviour and make sure that in the future our public conveniences are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness.”
