Wedding bliss for landlord as pub wins battle to host reception

-

A PUB has won a licensing battle to host a couple’s wedding reception after concerns were raised over potential noise issues.

Worries had been expressed after a village pub applied to hold the one-off event.

Neil Hay, landlord of The Colvile Arms in Main Street, Lullington, made South Derbyshire District Council aware of the upcoming wedding with a temporary event notice for Saturday, September 4.

It includes the sale of alcohol from 1pm to 11.30pm and the provision of regulated entertainment from 7.30pm to 11.30pm.

However, principal environmental health officer John Mills raised objections to the plan.

He said: “Previous events of this nature at the premises have caused a statutory nuisance to neighbouring residents.

“Environmental health served a noise abatement notice and gave licensee advice as to what was acceptable.

This event is likely to breach the abatement notice and therefore also the licensing objective.

“The applicant has not yet contacted us in advance of the event and has previously been advised that subsequent applications would likely be objected to by environmental health.”

But Mr Hay says the issue has now been resolved and the pub can host the wedding reception after discussions were held to put measures in place. He said there had been some complaints over events before he took over, which resulted in the abatement notice being put in place.

However, he says since his team took the reins four years ago, they have very rarely held any events.

He says a noise plan is in place, as well as specified serving hours, and the reception will be a happy day for the pub as it celebrates the marriage of two villagers.

Mr Hay has praised the council’s environmental health officers for their support and advice to make sure all concerns were dealt with.
