Get set, go for an adventure

Make the most of the last days of summer with these National Trust activities that get all the family involved

IT’S hard to believe we are almost at the end of the summer holidays – but there’s still time to have fun as a family.

And, if you’re starting to run out of ideas, the National Trust has a few up its sleeve to make sure there are still magical memories to be made.

“There are lots of activities for whole families at the places we care for,” says a spokesperson for the Trust, “and summer is a great time to get curious about nature – to feel the tickly grass underfoot, smell the flowery scents and listen to the buzzing and twittering of wildlife all around you.”

The Trust has devised a series of ‘Get set, go’ cards to help you create your own adventures as you explore the venues near where you live, or wherever you’re away on holiday.

Often, it says, after all the trouble of getting everyone in the same place, at the same time, it can be hard to know what games and activities will work for everyone.

So it designed the ‘Get set, go’ activities, with support from Sport England, to appeal to all generations and get everyone active and moving together.

“There might be as much as 70 years between the oldest and the youngest family members,” the Trust adds, “but with ‘Get set, go’ families can focus on more than 20 simple fun ideas such as ‘go barefoot’, ‘hop, skip, jump’ or ‘make a splash’– to explore, get active and enjoy the outdoors together.

“There’s something wonderful about being the backdrop to reunions between family and friends, especially after the last 18 months.”

Families can download the activities on the National Trust’s website, nationaltrust.org.uk – where there’s also a range of downloadable activities, from simple ideas for making the most of summer in the garden, the park or even for rainy days spent indoors – or simply pickup the cards at visitor reception areas.
