City woman and man who died in M6 crash named
A MAN and woman from Derby died after the car they were in swerved off the road and into woodland, an inquest heard.
Moeez Masroor Subhani and Aimen Rafiq were travelling on the M6 northbound through Lancashire when the Mazda 3 they were in left the road.
The incident happened near Stubbins Lane in Catterall, between J32 and J33 on the motorway, on August 12 and left both with fatal injuries.
The inquests into both deaths were opened at Lancashire Coroner’s Court in Preston yesterday.
At the hearing Richard Taylor, area coroner for Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen, said it was believed the pair had been travelling north on their way to Scotland when the crash happened.
He said that witnesses described seeing the car “losing control” before heading off the road into an area covered by undergrowth and trees.
As a result the vehicle sustained “significant damage”, while Mr Subhani, 33, and Ms Rafiq, 27, both received fatal injuries, although specific details of these were not revealed at yesterday’s hearing.
Mr Taylor added that the pair, who both lived in Stepping Lane, Derby, had been wearing seatbelts, and that Mr Subhani had been the driver while Ms Rafiq was in the front passenger seat.
The inquests were adjourned to a future date when a full hearing will take place.
