Buy a used car in Derby for half what it will cost 20 miles away in Notts
PRICES VARY ACCORDING TO LOCATION, STUDY FINDS
USED cars in Derby are nearly half the price of similar cars up for sale in a Nottinghamshire town, a study has found.
Car finance firm Moneybarn examined listings for the ubiquitous Ford Fiesta from across the country and found Derby to be the thirdcheapest place in England to pick up a used car, with the average Fiesta price set at £7,397.
But over the border in Sutton-inAshfield, just 20 miles away, the same study found similar Ford Fiestas to be priced at an average of £14,104.
And avoiding the dealers in nearby Castle Donington would also appear to be a wise move, according to the figures, as the average Fiesta there would set buyers back £12,899.
Derby’s discount dealers failed to propel the city to the top of the table of bargain places to buy a used car, with the Essex town of Romford offering its family hatchbacks for an average cost of just £5,894.
Newcastle, the second-cheapest town in the UK, was close to Derby with the average car priced at £7,193.
Moneybarn says it arrived at its conclusions by scanning thousands of listings on used car platform Parkers, looking at all ages, models and trims listed on the site. Meanwhile, the firm also studied reviews of dealerships and found some interesting results, including counting up the number of “terrible” reviews left across towns.
And Derby’s neighbouring town of Burton came out top for the number of “terrible” reviews left for car dealers, with more than half (52.1%) the public feedback left for dealerships suggesting poor service.
According to the study, the best place for decent service is WestonSuper-Mare, with just 4.8% of the dealers’ reviews said to be “terrible”, with Cannock in second place with 11.1%.
