Sebastian Coe broke the mile world record for the third time in Brussels. The record of three minutes and 47.33 seconds stood for four years until it was broken by Steve Cram.

1989:

Manchester United broke the transfer record between two British clubs by paying Middlesbro­ugh £2.3m for defender Gary Pallister.

1999:

Ruud Gullit resigned as Newcastle United manager, a year to the day after he took over at St James’ Park.

2004:

Jason Gardener, Darren Campbell, Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis-Francis won gold for Great Britain in the Olympic men’s 4x100m relay final in Athens.

2006:

Roy Keane signed his contract to officially start work as Sunderland manager. The former Manchester United midfielder took the Black Cats from bottom of the Championsh­ip to title winners during the course of the season.

2007:

Manchester United and Norway striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer announced his retirement from football.

2009:

Charles Jillings resigned as Harlequins chairman following the ‘Bloodgate’ scandal. Quins director of rugby Dean Richards ordered winger Tom Williams to fake a blood injury in the dying minutes of a Heineken Cup tie in the 2008-09 season.

2014:

England manager Roy Hodgson announced Wayne Rooney would become the new captain of the national side.
