City restaurants with zero or one star hygiene ratings

-

MANY of us look forward to an easy takeaway.

Lots of things come into consideration, from price to delivery times, but one thing you may not think of is how clean the business is.

Several restaurants and takeaways in Derby have been slammed for poor food hygiene and lack of cleanliness, with inspections beginning again after the easing of lockdown restrictions.

There are 30 restaurants in Derby that have zero or one-star ratings, which mean urgent or major improvement is necessary.

Normanton Road and Pear Tree Road are home to 12 of them, with the rest scattered around the city.

The Derby Telegraph has recently reported on several restaurants which have received low scores from the Food Hygiene Agency, with problems ranging from dead and live mouse infestations to cockroaches and a lack of clean clothing for staff.

Reports accessed via a Freedom of Information request show the wide range of problems affecting restaurants on the strip.

Istanbul Restaurant, in Pear Tree

Road, was found to have both dead and live mice and droppings throughout the premises before it was temporarily closed in March after a zero-star rating. But it then made only minor improvements and was given a one-star rating on reinspection in June.

Lahorees, on the same road, was found to have cockroaches when inspectors visited, although its manager,

Danish Raja, said the problems had now been fixed.

He said: “When we took over this place, the history was really bad. So when we took over, we did everything, and we got everything ready.

“The inspector has since come down and checked everything, and they said everything is fine and we’re ready to go now, and they will be visiting again.”

Inspections are carried out by Derby City Council and any outlet scoring three stars is classed as being generally compliant with food hygiene regulations.

The council can temporarily close a business in order for work to be carried out if there is a risk to public safety.
