DERBY leaders and city shoppers have been reacting to the news that a new department store is coming to Derbion.

Frasers will be opening next year in the city shopping centre’s biggest unit, which has been empty since Debenhams closed in early May.

After the big news was announced yesterday, Derby leaders and city shoppers have been offering up their reaction.

John Forkin, managing director of Marketing Derby, said: “The team at the Derbion have really excelled themselves and it’s hard to underestimate how important this news is for the city.

“In the past 10 years £1.4 billion has been invested into Derby city centre, with a further £576 million in the pipeline.”

While Derby City Council took to Twitter to describe yesterday’s announcement as “fantastic news for Derby.”

Dozens of Derby Telegraph readers have taken to our Facebook page to react to the news.

Among them was Adrian Mannion who says the creation of new jobs from the department store will provide a boost for the city. He said: “Very good news that empty stores will be occupied with something a little different. Plus it will create jobs, so that can only be good news for the city.”

Andy Fox wanted to credit Frasers Group chief executive Mike Ashley after his company agreed a deal to open a Frasers and Flannels store in Derby.

Andy posted a comment to say: “Well credit to Mike Ashley. Trying to keep the city centres open.”

Mr Ashley is set to step down from leading his retail empire and hand the reins to his prospective son-in-law next year.

Also commenting was Hardeep Sanghera, who described the announcement as “brilliant news for the centre and people of Derby.”
