Angry driver hurled tirade of abuse at police officers

-

AN irate man went on an abusive rant against police officers in a supermarket car park.

The incident took place on Friday, July 16 in the car park of the Sainsbury’s in Melbourne while officers were speaking with two teenage boys in the car park on e-scooters.

The man, who has not been named, was sitting in his car and started ranting and hurling abuse at officers, before leaving the location in a Volkswagen vehicle.

A spokesperson from Melbourne Police Safe Neighbourhood Team said: “Officers were engaging with two teenage boys in the car park of the food store when the road safety discussion was brought to a premature halt.

“With outside temperatures reaching a scorching 29 degrees, the hot air was further increased with the arrival of an expostulating purple-faced motorist.

“Scrunched in a sedentary position, with one arm flaying out of the car window, the motorist ranted at officers, before leaving the location in a Volkswagen vehicle.

“The shameful incident attracted considerable local disquietude, with several members of the public looking on with alarm and concern.”

The man, who has not been named, appeared at Swadlincote police station on Wednesday, August 15 and was given a Community Protection Notice Warning (CPNW) for being aggressive in a public area and lasts for one year.

A spokesperson from the police added: “The warning prohibits the male from being aggressive in a public area, including in supermarket car parks, especially in front of young children.

“He was also ordered to stop using language and conduct that is likely to cause harassment or distress anywhere that is considered to be a public place in South Derbyshire.

“The warning notice lasts for 12 months and if not adhered to can result in a full notice, which carries criminal sanctions and fines.

“With sadness, your Safer Neighbourhood Team do occasionally come across individuals who think it is acceptable to hurl abuse at officers.

“However, this incident was particularly distasteful as the man’s tantrum, conducted in the heart of the village and in full view of several members of the public, caused embarrassment to two very polite young teenagers.”
