A JEALOUS gunman who tried to kill the mother of his son by shooting her has been jailed for 27 years and faces the threat of deportation on his release.

Tyrone Harvey coldly shot the woman in the face at close range with a crude improvised handgun at a house in Derby. He had become enraged by the idea of her sleeping with another man.

His attempt to kill means he will spend at least 18 years behind bars before being able to apply for parole, having lied throughout the trial.

Once released, he could be deported to the island of St Kitts in the Caribbean, where he is originally from, it is understood.

Harvey had denied firing the shot that seriously injured Jodie Dickinson but a jury unanimously found him guilty of attempted murder.

At one point he even claimed that she had shot herself in order to frame him. His story was not believed.

A jury took three-and-a-half hours to find Harvey guilty of the attempted murder of Jodie Dickinson at an address in Alvaston.

After accusing the 34-year-old victim of sleeping with another man he held an improvised firearm to her face and shot her in the mouth.

The ball bearing lodged in her eye socket and had to be surgically removed two months later.

Harvey, 32, will not be able to apply for parole for 18 years, twothirds of the way through his prison term.

Jailing him for 27 years, Judge Shaun Smith QC said: “The jury has found you guilty of the second most serious offence on the criminal calendar, that you attempted to murder, intended to kill your victim Jodie Dickinson.

“You, at every stage of the proceedings, have tried to make sure you weren’t held responsible.

“When you came to court you spun lie after lie trying to pull the wool over the jury’s eyes, coming up with some cock and bull story that someone else had shot her or that Jodie even shot herself to frame you. But the day of reckoning has come.

“What you did was to hold an improvised firearm against her face and you shot her in the head.

“Mercifully, goodness knows how, despite the ball bearing lodging in her face she has got over what happened physically.”
