More city brown bins miss being emptied

ONGOING LORRY DRIVER SHORTAGE HITS COUNCIL SERVICE

DERBY City Council has issued an update after more brown bin collections were missed this week due to the continuing driver shortage.

Collections were not completed as planned in more than 70 city streets on Tuesday, with a further 27 streets affected on Wednesday.

The authority has confirmed its refuse team is currently being affected by a lack of drivers caused by the HGV test backlog, which is causing problems across many industries nationally.

This has led to additional drivers being drafted in from other council services where possible.

Councillor Jerry Pearce, cabinet member for Streetpride and public spaces, says black and blue bin collections are currently being prioritised over garden waste collections.

Mr Pearce said: “I would like to

pass on my thanks for the hard work that the refuse teams are doing in this difficult time.

“I’d ask residents to please be patient and to help us by reducing their waste where possible.

“We will ensure that black and

blue bin collections are prioritised and will do our best to maintain a full brown bin collection service.

“Where we can’t empty bins, we will do everything we can to get these collected as soon as possible after their scheduled collection.’’
