A DERBYSHIRE university student vowed from his hospital bed after getting Covid “I will beat this” – but tragically died four weeks later.

Cameron Day, from Denby, died following complications from coronavirus just weeks after celebrating his 21st birthday on July 15.

Mr Day studied graphic design at the University of Lincoln and graduated with a first class honours degree this summer

But a week after being offered his dream job in London he then tested positive for Covid-19 on June 28 and spent weeks in intensive care while also contracting sepsis and being in a coma.

He posted on LinkedIn a month before his death, where he said battling Covid was “the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do” and vowed to beat the disease so he could achieve his degree.

Dozens of touching pictures and tributes have been posted online remembering Mr Day, with friends and family describing him as “so kind and thoughtful” and “a truly amazing young man”.

Now an award which recognises the best national design talent is set to celebrate his life and ability, after he designed a drain unblocking device called “Plunge”.

In a statement, his family said: “It would have meant the world to Cameron to win this award.

“We are so proud of him and everything he achieved.”

The JDO RAW award is run by the design and innovation company JDO, with the prize set to be accepted by staff from the university. The prize money will be donated to the family’s JustGiving page set up in Mr Day’s memory, with the money raised being donated to the Intensive Care Unit at Lincoln County Hospital, which the family had previously described as “exceptional”.

Jo Mansfield and Rhona BreezeLawlor, lecturers at the University of Lincoln, said: “Cameron was an extremely talented student with huge potential and we are all devastated by his loss.

“This award will exist as a tribute to his immense talent.”

Ben Oates, JDO principal and group creative director, said: “Cameron’s submission really stood out and he was chosen as the winner before we knew he was unwell with Covid.

“This award is testament to his exceptional talent and a creative spirit that shone bright. Our heart goes out to his family and his friends at this most difficult of times.”

Mr Day died in Lincoln County Hospital on August 5.
