Afghan people did not ask to be invaded
I AM astounded by “lifelong Tory” Alan Warner’s callousness and disregard of the facts concerning the plight of the Afghan people (“War-torn people should stand together”, Letters, September 1).
Afghanistan did not ask to be invaded by the US and the UK. It did not ask for a quarter of a million of its people to be killed and parts of its infrastructure to be destroyed.
Thousands of Afghans who helped American and British forces have now been abandoned to a gruesome fate. Mr Warner, we owe the Afghans plenty!
If anything is to be learned from this debacle, let us hope Western powers will refrain from wasting trillions of dollars/pounds/euros and human lives on pointless and fruitless military interventions when not called upon to do so.
