Stop the stink!

RESIDENTS FED UP WITH ‘VILE’ PONG FROM NEARBY FACTORY

- By NIGEL SLATER

RESIDENTS living near a Derby food factory say they are having to keep their windows closed because of a “vile” smell.

People in Balfour Road want something done about a “rotten meat” smell which the city council has confirmed is coming from the 2 Sisters factory in nearby Shaftesbury street.

Jhanzeeb Gul, who has lived in Balfour Road for around 20 years, said the stink was “becoming unbearable”. He said: “The smell is absolutely vile. It’s been going on and off for the last few months but this week it has been much worse.”

WORRIED residents say they are having to keep their windows closed because of a “revolting” smell which is making their lives a misery.

Residents living in the Balfour Road area of Derby say they are getting fed up with the “rotten meat” smell and are demanding something is done about it.

They also say they have seen flies and rats in the area, which is adding to their concerns.

The residents say they are “100 per cent sure” the smell is coming from the nearby 2 Sisters Food factory, in Shaftesbury Street.

Derby City Council has confirmed it is investigating and that the source of the smell is from the factory, due to a “mechanical failure”.

Residents say they have complained to the company and also to Derby City Council about the issue.

On Friday, a Derby Telegraph staff member visited Balfour Road and told the Local Democracy Service: “It’s disgusting. I would be very annoyed if I lived there.

“It’s like a cooking version of your bin after a few days of rubbish being in there.”

Jhanzeeb Gul, who has lived in Balfour Road for around 20 years, said he was extremely concerned about the stink.

He said: “The smell is absolutely vile. It’s been going on and off for the last few months but this week it has been much worse.

“We are having to keep our windows closed constantly. I have seen rats running around.

“I am 100 per cent sure it’s from the 2 Sisters food factory.

“I am very concerned. It’s now got to the point it is becoming unbearable. If nothing is done we will have to look at moving elsewhere.”

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, added: “When you open your windows you can smell it – it is so bad it is making me feel sick.”

A spokesperson for Derby City Council said: “Our environmental health team are investigating complaints from residents about unpleasant smells in the area and have been in touch with 2 Sisters Food Group.

“The factory has told us that due to a mechanical failure with a piece of machinery waste could not be cleared from the site in the usual way this week, but that all the waste has now been cleared.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation.” The Local Democracy Reporting Service has approached the 2 Sisters Food Group for comment.

We are having to keep our windows closed constantly. I have seen rats running around.
