RESIDENTS have expressed shock and concern after a collision in Heanor which claimed the life of a 29-year-old man on Saturday evening.

Officers said a man died at the scene after a BMW crashed into a wall in Heanor Gate Road at around 6.35pm.

Multiple emergency service vehicles attended the incident.

The incident caused the road to be closed for several hours, with tyre marks and damage still visible on Sunday.

Residents have expressed their upset after the incident.

One said: “I was just watching TV, I saw the sirens but not much else. It’s terrible, just terrible.”

Another resident said: “When you go down the road you can see big marks. It’s dangerous, it’s a 30mph road.

“I looked down the street and all I could see was the car and paramedics, firemen and all that. We didn’t see what happened but there was a lot of activity.

“The car was still there, but my wife ... said the car had gone, so they must have taken it overnight.”

Emergency services reportedly left the scene at around 9pm.

The road has a long, straight stretch which residents say is often quiet at night due to the offices and workshops on the surrounding industrial estate being closed.

Councillor Alexander Stevenson, Derbyshire County Council representative for Greater Heanor, said speedreducing measures on the road could be needed to prevent future incidents.

He said: “I certainly send my condolences to the family. We need to have a look at it, if this is a regular thing.

“It’s hard to really put traffic-calming measures down on that road because of the commercial vehicles going up and down there.

“I’d like to see more CCTV up there too, and I have been pushing for that, to prevent more incidents.”

Derbyshire police have asked anyone who was in the area at the time and may be able to assist officers with their investigation to contact them on 101, including reference 21000514486.
