‘Solid support’ for strike by rail workers

-

THE latest strike by workers on East Midlands Railways was said to be “solidly supported” yesterday.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union working as senior conductors and train managers are involved in separate long-running disputes over contracts and staffing.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “I want to pay tribute to our members who are standing firm again today on East Midlands Railways in the two ongoing disputes. We have yet more clear evidence of safety breaches on strike breaker-operated trains from last weekend that we have raised with the authorities.

“The union is continuing to compile a dossier for the safety regulator and is demanding that the company stop taking these unnecessary risks and start talking with us about a settlement.”

The company has denied the union’s claims on safety, adding that it was able to run a significant proportion of services despite the strike.
