Alfreton are up and take the crown, too

-

ALFRETON’S dominant season in Derbyshire County League Division One will see them back in the Premier Division for 2022.

They clinched promotion and the title with a massive home win over Dunstall on Saturday.

Dunstall put them in and though Ryan Newton fell early, Tom New (87) and Matt New (48) added 140 for the second wicket.

It only got worse for Dunstall as Muhammad Zaroob raced to a century in 41 balls, hitting 11 sixes and four fours.

Ryan Bramwell watched most of that but then cut loose himself, going on to 77 not out from 40 balls with eight sixes and two fours.

Alfreton’s usual late innings big hitter, Muhammad Asim, missed out this time, out for 17 from eight balls but the result was still a mighty 386-5.

Zaroob then took 3-30 as Dunstall’s reply slid into trouble and with Asim adding 3-48 they were dismissed for 205 in 40 overs.

Alrewas need eight points from their last match to join Alfreton in the top division next season for the first time after thrashing Wirksworth & Middleton.

Jameas Burton and Stephen Cole scored half-centuries as Alrewas, put in, scored 248 all out from 48 overs.

They need not have worried about handing Wirksworth two extra overs to play with, as they bowled them out for 95.

Matt Frend took an early wicket and Billy Hodgkinson took 3-11 but spinner Sam Van Daesdonk occasionally has days when he runs through teams and he took 6-17 from 100 overs.

Rolleston will need Alrewas to slip up away to Sawley, while beating Wirksworth themselves, if they are to snatch second place.

They kept themselves in the hunt with a comfortable win over Cutthorpe, Gareth Marshall and Tom Liversage scoring half-centuries in a useful 250-5.

Alex Brown’s exemplary return of 2-15 from 12 overs kept Cutthorpe on the back foot in reply and Ed Barlow’s run a ball 51 in the middle order was not enough as they were bowled out for 158.

At the other end of the table, Clifton grabbed a lifeline by hammering Duffield.

Duffield chose to bat but were back in the pavilion in 17.5 overs for 52 as teenager Kian Walwyn, promoted to open the bowling for the firsts, took 4-24 from seven overs and 13-year-old Harry Moore took 3-12 from six overs.

Spinner Bilal Hussain added 3-4 and Clifton knocked off the runs without loss.

Duffield are back in the second relegation place but can still save themselves, as they are 11 points behind Clifton with a game in hand and have a double header this weekend.

Bottom club Lullington Park are close to the drop after losing to Ilkeston Rutland. They are 12 points behind Clifton with one game to play.
