9-hour storm warning for Derbyshire

-

WEATHER forecasters have issued a weather warning for thunderstorms for Derbyshire tomorrow.

Derbyshire’s unseasonably hot September weather could come to an end with a bang with the Met Office warning that torrential rain could bring flooding in the county.

Meteorologists say thunder and lightning will arrive in the morning, and have decided to issue a ninehour yellow warning as a result.

This warning covers the whole of Derbyshire and is set to come into force at 11am tomorrow and last until 8pm, although this could change as forecasts are updated.

The last few days have seen temperatures reach the mid-20s, and these are set to continue today with highs of 27C. However, these are set to end with a bang, with temperatures predicted to drop to highs of 22C tomorrow amid the rain.

The Met Office says this rain has the potential to cause disruption on the roads and maybe even flooding in some areas.

It adds that some rural and isolated communities could become cut off by the rain, and that lightning strikes could cause damage to some buildings as well as power outages.

The Met Office states: “Following overnight rain and showers, more intense showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out fairly widely from latemorning, before easing during the evening. Whilst most areas will miss the most intense storms, torrential downpours are possible in a few places. Where these occur, there is potential for 20 to 30mm of rain in less than an hour and up to 40mm in two hours. This would have the potential to generate surface water flooding, especially if it falls over an urban area.” ■■Weather map, P22
