Homeless hostel has closed down
CHARITY FOCUSING ON OTHER FORMS OF SUPPORT
A HOMELESS hostel in Derby city centre has closed down permanently, it has been revealed.
The Padley Group charity, which runs the hostel and day centre at Beckett Street, revealed it is no longer open in a planning statement for a different home in the city centre.
Padley House provided an open access twelve-bed hostel and day centre provision and welcomed between 60 and 100 people each day,
But the charity, which has been established for more than 35 years in Derby, says it undergoing a period of “very significant change”, both in terms of service delivery and location.
This follows Derby City Council’s plans to regenerate the Becketwell area of the city centre, which includes the potential demolition of Padley House on Beckett Street.
It means The Padley Group has decided that rather than manage a hostel, it is now supporting men and women in dispersed, self-contained accommodation.
And the charity’s day centre where it can run services and activities for homeless people and those in need will be relocated.
Plans were submitted to Derby City Council this week to locate the charity’s new day centre hub on Charnwood Street, off Normanton Road.
A supporting statement says: “The Padley Group is in the process of acquiring a property on Charnwood Street and is applying for a change of use so that it may undertake services for homeless people in Derby supporting the city council’s Homlessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy.
“The property on Charnwood Street will not be used for residential accommodation for homeless people or others similarly disadvantaged.
“Padley’s current hostel at Beckett Street is now permanently closed and we, in partnership with Derby Homes, have moved to a model of providing support to men and women in individual self contained accommodation.
“During the day, the Charnwood Street building will be used to provide activities to support those who are seeking to move out of the cycle of deprivation into which they have fallen for whatever reason.
“We will be providing opportunities to develop cooking/dietary skills, job seeking, healthy living, basic IT and so on – skills which will build confidence and potentially lead to employment.”
