If no trees for golf course then what?

-

SO the issue of Allestree Golf Course rumbles on (“Golf course could be replaced by 500,000 trees, say council”, August 21).

Personally I would support the council in this issue and would love to see the golf course replaced by 500,000 trees, especially if some more wetlands could be included as well.

However, reading further into the story and in particular Cllr Roulstone’s well-chosen words, I have my doubts as to whether it will happen.

For example Cllr Roulstone is quoted as saying “There is no suggestion at this stage that all the trees will definitely be planted but there is potential for it to happen”.

This suggests that the planned woodland might not happen and if all of the trees won’t be planted, then how many will, 100,000, 500, none? It begs the question that if Cllr Roulstone is unable to commit to the planting of all of the trees what else does she and her fellow councillors have planned for the area?

What I fear may happen is that the golf course will close, no trees will be planted and in the mean time a property developer will submit a planning application that the council won’t be able to resist.

So I would challenge Cllr Roulstone to tell us exactly why the 500,000 trees may not be planted and what will go in their place if they’re not, before this project goes any further.
