THE NORTH WATER

Chilling adventures in freezing conditions must be all the rage – this terrifying historical drama is not too dissimilar to The Terror, another thriller about a doomed 19th-century voyage.

The cast is excellent, with Jack O’Connell as disgraced ex-Army surgeon Patrick Sumner, who boards a whaling ship bound for the Arctic. He’s hiding a few legal and addiction issues. Also on board is Drax, played by Colin Farrell, a British harpooner and force of nature.

Baxter (Sir Tom Courtenay), the ship’s owner, and his Captain, Brownlee (Stephen Graham, pictured), scheme to ensure the voyage is a profitable one.

No-one has any idea that Brownlee has a plan to sink the ship for the insurance money.
