Rapper Lil Nas X salutes ‘gay agenda’

LIL Nas X won the top prize at the MTV Video Music Awards and gave a tongue-in-cheek thank you to the “gay agenda”.

The annual ceremony brought some of the biggest names in pop to the Barclays Centre in New York City, with Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran and the Foo Fighters among a starstudde­d list of performers.

Lil Nas X won the coveted video of the year award for Montero (Call Me By Your Name) ahead of fellow nominees including Cardi B, Megan The Stallion, Drake, Doja Cat and The Weeknd.

Accepting the prize, the delighted rapper, 22, said: “First, I want to say thank you to the gay agenda! Let’s go, gay agenda!”

Lil Nas X is frequently criticised for performanc­es unashamedl­y celebratin­g his sexuality.

The music video for Montero (Call Me By Your Name) featured the musician sliding down a pole into hell before giving the devil a lap dance.

The star, who has emerged as a vocal advocate for LGBT rights, used a performanc­e during the VMAs to raise awareness of HIV in the US South.
