We need to take more pride in environment
IT’S hard to believe that in this day and age when we are so much more aware of the environment, how much littering is a problem… no, I will go as far as saying a scourge on modern society. And it’s all so pointless.
Did you know that the most recent figures from the government, for 2016 to 2017, show it cost local authorities £682 million or £29 per household to keep our streets clean? In addition, Highways England spends at least £6 million a year on collecting litter from the Strategic Road Network.
I know I’m not the only one
concerned enough about this to litter-pick regularly in my neighbourhood in Belper, and my thanks go to the other concerned citizens who do this as well.
We know that this is part of the cause of plastics getting into the sea and our food chain, but some of the waste pollution I’ve seen locally is harmful to our local wildlife as well.
But ultimately this comes down to having pride in our area – and each one of us has a responsibility here.
