IMAGES have been released showing what a new market in Derby city centre could look like.

Plans have been submitted for a kiosk-style market at St Peter’s Churchyard next to St Peter’s Street in the heart of Derby.

Burton Abbey Developments wants to transform an area of overgrown wasteland next to the church into a vibrant market which will bring a new lease of life into the area.

If approved the market could have up to 14 kiosk-style stalls, seating areas, toilet facilities and a performance area.

To make the plans a reality, Derby City Council is being asked to give permission so a Grade II Listed boundary wall can be partly demolished so an entrance area can be created for the market. Historic England has objected to the plans saying a market would be “inappropriate” for the site. However, members of Derby City Council’s conservation area committee backed the idea in principle.

A letter to the city council from Derbyshire police also said the applicant should consider the risks involved as drug addicts and street drinkers have been known to use the “nuisance” area in recent times.

In response, Burton Abbey Developments said it would introduce a robust management plan, have monitored CCTV, and would forge partnerships with neighbours, the police, street wardens, and Derby City Council to “dramatically improve the neighbourhood”.

A spokesperson for Burton Abbey Developments said: “Overall we cannot see any negative aspects to the proposal, and of course we wish to work with planners, the conservation area committee, and Derby City Council to ensure that the development is carried out sympathetically and with design values that satisfy any concerns. “The overall design and materials used can be discussed and agreed upon via planning conditions, and sensitive aspects such as the new entrance will be given the
