Gilbert full of praise for character of Albion team

-

JOINT manager Kristian Gilbert praised the Burton Albion Women’s side for showing good character in their comfortable 5-2 win over Bedworth United in the FAWN League Cup.

Despite falling behind after only 30 seconds, the Brewers responded superbly, with two goals from Emily Gillott, a debut goal from Beth Naqwi and goals from substitutes Hanaiya Azhar and Emmalee Hornsby guiding them to a comfortable victory.

While conceding the first goal is not a habit the Brewers will want to fall into, Gilbert was happy with the mental fortitude his side showed to fight back.

“We’ve done that quite a few times this season now, we’ve gone behind, which is not the ideal start, but we’ve got some good character at the moment,” said Gilbert.

“We’re strong and really resilient and sometimes it takes that for us to get going a bit, but I’m really proud of them for forgetting about it and getting on with the game.”

Gilbert was also happy to see different names on the scoresheet, hoping that it will spur them on for the rest of the campaign.

“Ella (Ritchie) has dominated goal scoring this season and it was great to see Em (Hornsby) get two,” said

Gilbert.

“Beth (Naqwi), on her debut, was also great.

“It’s good for everyone’s confidence and two subs coming off the bench and scoring and having a good impact on the game is also positive.”

Despite not managing to get her name on the scoresheet against Bedworth, Ritchie still found a way to contribute, setting up three of Burton’s goals.

Gilbert was full of praise for the striker: “She’s brilliant, there’s nothing she can’t do,” he added.
