Final burst of summer could last a week in Derbyshire

-

DERBYSHIRE could get one last warm and sunny taste of summer, as a calm spell may last well into next week.

Following a dull and dreary August and a brief burst of heat in early September, forecasters are predicting the mild and sunny weather could last for another seven days, with temperatures up in the 20s.

However, while the weather will generally be bright and sunny, there will be risks of showers developing from time to time, particularly over the weekend.

Fortunately, the prolonged spell of rain we saw on Tuesday looks to have been a one-off, as there are no further deluges due for the month in the long-term outlook.

The long-range forecasts point towards the second half of September being much drier than average, with temperatures at or just above the seasonal norm.

This should make for some very pleasant days to come, if we can dodge the occasional light shower, with long sunny spells and temperatures comfortably nudging 20C or higher.

By the end of next week, uncertainty creeps in, and we look to the Atlantic where a spell of low pressure is set to develop. This, according to forecasters, could leave us with one of two outcomes.

According to Derby-based forecaster Robert Shaw, who updates his followers daily on his Facebook page The Actual Weather, there is a chance it could lead to a spell of hot weather.

Referring to the latest charts, he said: “Most of the GFS (Global Forecasting System) run suggest a deep Atlantic low will steam in, bringing an unsettled autumn.

“The anomaly charts don’t support that and this one GFS run is far more in line with what the anomalies predict.

“What the charts show, and this is the option I will run with, is a warm southwesterly, but with a shortwave low over Ireland. So that would be breezy and unsettled with a spell of cloud and rain across Ireland and Scotland.”
