Council seeks to recruit 10 bin lorry drivers as collections are missed

DERBY City Council is recruiting 10 bin lorry drivers to help ease the continued disruption to garden waste collections.

More brown bin collections have been missed on dozens of city streets this week, with 45 streets affected on Tuesday alone.

Issues concerning staffing levels among the city council’s refuse team also saw garden waste collections missed at the start of this month, leading to additional drivers being drafted in from other council services.

The authority recently confirmed that its refuse team is being affected by a lack of drivers caused by the HGV test backlog, which is causing problems across many industries nationally.

Now the council has released details of 10 refuse lorry driver vacancies for its Streetpride team, which currently has around 110 employees.

A spokesman for Derby City Council said: “There are 10 collector driver vacancies within the waste management team.

“We would like to fill these by training existing colleagues or by recruiting new colleagues into the council.

“Collector driver salaries start at £21,322, rising to £23,080.

“Our employees have access to a range of benefits including a Local Government Pension scheme, retail discounts, Cycle2Work scheme and more. The role does require a minimum of a Class 2 licence, but all other training is provided by us to successful candidates. If anyone interested in these roles please visit www.derby.gov.uk/jobs-andcareers/”.

Those looking to acquire a Class 2 licence to be eligible to apply for the roles could complete the training

and tests required at a local driver training centre.

S-G Transport Training and Logistics Ltd, based in Allenton, is an accredited driver training centre for Derby, Nottingham and the surrounding areas.

The firm offers several Category C

(Class 2) training courses which take approximately two months to complete, depending on waiting times, and cost between £1,400 and £1,850.

After completing theory tests, prospective lorry drivers can then book in for their practical driver training and test.
